Your GBP Is Your Storefront
If you're running a local service business and you're not obsessing over your Google Business Profile (GBP), you're leaving money on the table. Period.
I've audited over 100 local business profiles in the last year, and the same mistakes show up again and again. Today I'm walking you through the 7 most common ones - and how to fix each one in under 30 minutes.
Mistake #1: Incomplete Profile Information
Google rewards completeness. Every empty field is a missed ranking opportunity.
The fix: Complete 100% of your profile. Business hours, services, attributes, products, FAQs. Yes, all of it.
Mistake #2: Wrong Primary Category
Your primary category has the biggest impact on what searches you show up for. A "Plumber" category will rank you for plumbing searches. A "Contractor" category? Not so much.
The fix: Research what your top competitors use. Match the most specific category that describes your main service.
Mistake #3: No Recent Photos
Google's data shows profiles with 100+ photos get 520% more calls than those with fewer than 10. Photos signal an active, real business.
The fix: Add 5-10 new photos every month. Real work, real team, real workspace. Not stock photos.
Mistake #4: Ignoring Reviews
Reviews matter for two reasons: ranking signals AND social proof. But the magic happens in how you respond to them.
The fix: Respond to every review within 24 hours. Thank positive reviewers by name. Address negative reviews professionally and offer to resolve offline.
Mistake #5: No Google Posts
Google Posts appear directly in search results. They're free advertising. Yet 90% of businesses never use them.
The fix: Post weekly. Share offers, new services, before/after work, or customer wins.
Mistake #6: Inconsistent NAP
NAP = Name, Address, Phone. If your business info differs across Google, Facebook, Yelp, and your website, Google gets confused and trusts you less.
The fix: Audit your top 20 listings. Make every detail identical - down to the suite number formatting.
Mistake #7: No Service Areas Defined
If you serve customers within a 30-mile radius but only list one city, you're invisible in the other surrounding cities.
The fix: List every city you actively serve. Be honest - don't list cities you can't realistically reach.
